Planning and Budgeting for a Major Hiking Trip This Spring

Lone HikerHiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the world and with the weather warming up millions of people will be planning on taking their first major hiking trip this spring.

With the state of the economy in the United States many people are taking extra care than in years past because money is tight. Instead of taking out payday loans to pay for their hiking trip the average hiking family is planning for every little detail of their hiking trip well in advance.

Destination

There are literally hundreds of hiking destinations in the United States and many more worldwide. To save money, every hiker should consider hiking at a destination within their own state. To find the best hiking spots every hiker should use the internet to scope out reviews or visit their local bookstore to buy a hiking destination guide.

Budget

Some of the things that can be very expensive for any hiking trip are: hotel and travel costs. To save money a hiker should decide on where they want to hike then book their hotel stay in advance because hotels can book up quickly especially if a hiker is going to vacation at a major tourist destination.

To get to their hiking destination, a hiker should determine if they want to drive or fly. If the destination is four or more hours away they should consider driving because sometimes it’s more affordable to drive than fly. For those destinations that are across the country, a hiker should consider flying because, a cross country drive can take three days or longer and cut into the time spent on vacation.

Hiking Gear

If a hiker is going to fly to their destination they should consider having their hiking gear shipped instead of taking it with them on the plane. This step will help them to avoid paying excess baggage costs and insure that all of their gear will be there for them when they arrive. Once their vacation is over, the average hiker can box of their hiking equipment and ship it right back to their house.

Safety

Before hitting the trails, a hiker should make sure that they have at least one cell phone with them, a first aid kit and medical insurance just in case they get injured while on vacation. There’s nothing worse than dealing with a hiking related injury while on vacation and being extra prepared can help any hiker to save money. After all, no one wants to file chapter 7 bankruptcy over a hiking trip.
