The Words I Carry With Me

q4People often carry with them words of wisdom that inspire or give hope when all seems lost. Old Indian sayings or prayers are common; proverbs, psalms… You name it. Here are some favorites of not only mine, but others.

Inspiration and Comfort

Everything … Everyone , has to start somewhere. Zig Ziglar said it best with ‘you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great’. And next time the chips are down and you don’t know which way to turn, hopefully one of these will help: ‘When things get bad, we take comfort in the thought that they could always be worse. And when they are, we find hope in the thought that things are so bad they have to get better’; and ‘God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but he did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way’.

Just for Fun

I’m a huge believer in fun. If you can’t have fun at what you’re doing, why the heck are you doing it?! That said, here are some of my favorite fun loving quotes: there’s Mae West’s ‘It’s not the men in my life, it’s the life and my men’… You’ll notice she uses the plural. Then there’s the set of rules I have posted in my office which I dearly love: ‘These are the rules—rule number one, I’m always right. Rule number two, in case (by some slim chance) I should be wrong… see rule number one’. Not sure who wrote it and I really don’t care; I absolutely love it.

Having been a child of the sixties, I can’t help but have a little rebel still in me. For this reason I have framed on the wall of my office a quote from Famous Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes: ‘A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death’. Somebody play taps.
